Life-Saving Allergy Talk at Newton-Wellesley Hospital:

How to Prevent and Handle Severe Allergic Reactions

Life-threatening food allergies now affect an estimated 4% of teens and adults and 5% of young children. To help prevent tragic deaths and emergency situations, allergist Curtis Moody, MD, will present a talk and answer questions about food allergies and severe allergic reactions on Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the Metro-Boston Allergy and Asthma Educational Support Group, which meets at 7:00 p.m. at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. The program is free and open to the public.  It is sponsored by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, New England Chapter.

Dr. Moody will explain how to prevent, recognize, and treat anaphylaxis (the medical term for severe allergic reactions), and how to decide when to use epinephrine, the life-saving medication that comes in auto- injector devices.  In addition to foods, the same symptoms and responses apply to allergies to stinging insects, medications, and latex. Dr. Moody is an allergist with offices in Brookline and Concord, and serves as Medical Advisor to the support group.

            “It is important for everyone to know how to recognize the symptoms of a life-threatening reaction, and be prepared to give immediate treatment,” says Cindy Aswad of Needham, leader of the group. “We especially encourage parents, teachers, child care providers, and the friends and relatives of people with allergies, to attend. What they learn may help save a life someday.”

            This is the first meeting of the fall season for the support group. “We are varying the meeting nights in the coming months to make it possible for more people with regular evening commitments to attend at least one program,” said Sharon Schumack, Director of Education for AAFA New England. The group’s next meeting, on October 16, will feature a presentation titled “Food Allergies: A Recipe for Success at School,” by food allergy educator Jan Hanson, author of a new handbook for parents and school personnel. Discounted copies will be available for sale at the meeting.
