From the Principal's Desk
December 14-18 was National Inclusive Schools week
During that period, teachers read and discussed books to emphasize the unique qualities that each of us contribute to our classrooms and ways that we include everyone in our community. Inclusion was the focus of our Community Meeting on Monday, December 14. Prior to the meeting, each family completed a Ward School Puzzle piece by finishing the sentence, "We include others by... " Third grade students from odd numbered families shared at the Ward Community Meeting.
We are beginning to analyze our spring 2015 PARCC results. Our school performance was quite strong. PARCC results are reported in five levels with a goal of having all students perform at levels 4 or 5 in ELA (English Language Arts) and Math. The percentage of students performing at levels 4 or 5 are as follows:
Grade 3 92% ELA/ 98% math
Grade 4 89% ELA/ 84% math
Grade 5 94% ELA/ 85% math
PARCC has made a short survey available to parents to solicit feedback on the student reports. It provides an opportunity to make suggestions for improvements to the reports in future years. Here is the link:
A Message From Our Instructional Technology Specialist
We live in a world surrounded by technology. We know that whatever career our learners choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on their understanding of how technology works. Over the next several weeks, our school is joining in a nation-wide learning event, The Hour of Code. More than 100 million students worldwide will also be participating in this event. At Ward, the Hour of Code is an introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. In addition, The Hour of Code encourages critical thinking, problem solving and perseverance, and supports Newton's STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) initiatives.
See https://code.org/learn for details, and help spread the word. You can also go to our school's website for links to additional activities that you can do at home. We are looking forward to learning and exploring the world of code together.
Next Wednesday, 12/23, is a full day of school, and AfterSchool will close (as usual) at 5:50 PM.
Wishing you all a wonderful winter break,
