From the Nurse's Office - Summer Reminders
Medication Pick-up: Parents of students who have medication stored in the health room should pick it up by the last day of school, June 23. All medication (pills, epi-pens, inhalers, etc.) not picked up will be discarded. Please plan ahead to pick medication up so it is not wasted! Medication may not be carried home by the student -- it must be picked up by a parent. School nurses will not be available after June 23 to return medication to families.

Medication Order Reminder: All medication orders expire at the end of the school year. If you are visiting your child's health care provider during the summer, consider requesting a new medication order your child. All medication, prescription or over-the-counter, requires an order. The Medication Permission Form and the Medication Policy are both available online at  http://www.newtonma.gov/gov/health/school_health/default.asp

West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease Prevention: Mosquito and tick-borne diseases like West Nile Virus and Lyme disease occur in Newton residents. Take steps to avoid getting sick!
  • Mosquito repellant not only works for mosquitoes, but helps repel ticks as well. Use a repellant with DEET, and follow label instructions for concentrations appropriate for children.
  • Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito hours, particularly once West Nile Virus has been detected in the mosquito population.
  • Remove containers around your home (tires, kid pools, pots, tarps) that could allow mosquitoes to breed.
  • Check your body for ticks after being outdoors and remove them immediately to avoid disease transmission.
Shoo the flu! Seasonal influenza vaccine will be offered this fall during the school day to students and employees. Both the flu shot and the nasal spray flu vaccine will be available to all students in Kindergarten through grade 12, by parental consent only. Consent and screening forms will be posted at www.newtonma.gov/flu by mid-September, in preparation for the fall clinics. Insurance information will be requested, but all students are welcome to receive the vaccine at no charge.

The flu clinic date for Ward School will be October 5th. Forms (available in Sept.) will be due to the school nurse by September 30th. This schedule is confirmed unless the flu vaccine supply is delayed, in which case the school nurse will notify families of an alternative date once the vaccine arrives.

Have a happy and healthy summer!

Artsonia Update
Arstonia is a school fundraiser that benefits the art program directly.  20% of each sale goes back to the program to buy supplies.  And June is full of GREAT reasons to give gifts - Father's Day, end of the school year, graduation, hostess gifts, or just getting a jump start on holiday gifts for next year.

Choose from dozens of different items: mugs, water bottles, t-shirts, sketchbooks, notecards just to name a few. Personalize them with your child's artwork, and voila you have an original keepsake gift! Any way you slice it, personalized artwork is a truly unique gift.

We just added a ton of new artwork. So check your child's page, and encourage friends and family members to support Ward, and your budding artist, by buying Artsonia products for all of their gift-giving occasions. If you have any questions about the program, feel free to ask Lena Goodwin (lenagoodwin@mac.com) or Mrs. Broder (Amy_Broder@newton.k12.ma.us).
Thanks again for your support.

Next Fall's Grade-Wide Potluck Dinners

In the fall, we ask a parent in each grade to host a potluck dinner for the parents in that grade.  This is a great way to get to know the parents of your kids' friends in a casual social setting.  If you would like to host a dinner for your child's grade next fall, please email Kathy Shields, at kburdetteshields@yahoo.com.

Next Year's International Night

The Ward PTO will be hosting WARD INTERNATIONAL NIGHT next year.  Please think about hosting a country booth! For those of you visiting your native countries these summer holidays - this will be an opportunity for you to bring back a plethora of authentic crafts, and interesting objects to display in your respective country booths and further enrich our Ward School international Night. The kids will love it! If you have any questions, please contact Cheryl Abramson at cherylzabramson@gmail.com.
