Ward Children's Day Celebration
Spring is on it's way and brings with it the Japanese holiday Kodomo no Hi, Children's Day. Every year on May 5, Japan celebrates children by flying koi fish windsocks called koinobori. Koi fish swim against the stream and symbolize children working hard and achieving high goals. The koinobori look like they're swimming when the wind blows.

This year for the first time, we will celebrate Children's Day at Ward Elementary by giving every student, teacher and staff member a koinobori to decorate and asking them to attach an affirmation, a strength, something that makes them unique. We will hang the ~400 koinobori in the school in early May. Our hope is that in addition to sparking individual discussions about what makes each person special, we also highlight how collectively we create a beautiful and diverse community.

I am writing to ask for volunteers who could assist in assembling and hanging the koinobori. We could use help both in the art classes during the school day as well as after school. There is also a possibility of working from home, if that's better for your schedule. If you are able to help, please email me directly at:

Thank you very much for your help
