Ward’s Weekly Family Update - March 17th, 2019

Ward’s Weekly Family Update

March 17, 2019

Dear Ward Families,

I hope you are all enjoying these first spring-like days as we look forward to officially welcoming spring on Wednesday.  With the improved weather, I am pleased to see many more children walking to school.   It is imperative that, as community members, we each do our part to maintain a safe and orderly arrival and dismissal each day.  Regardless of how your children get to and from school, we all must know and comply with the rules for safety and efficiency.  Please review and share the highlights listed below with your family and any caretakers who may be involved in drop off or pick up.

A hugely important part of building up our school community is the home school connection.  We are looking forward to connecting with parents/guardians in person for conferences this month.  The expectation is that every family will attend a scheduled conference at some point over the course of the month, even if it falls slightly outside of Newton’s conference window.  This is a great opportunity to reinforce the home and school connection, learn what your child is learning, and discuss student successes as well as areas for growth.

I acknowledge that at this time of year, we begin thinking about the upcoming school year.  Please see the  Classroom Placement Letter to Families about our classroom placement process and optional Parent/Guardian Classroom Placement Input Form for the 2019-20 school year.  All parent/guardian input forms must be submitted to the main office by April 11.  I am providing all of this information and the input form prior to conferences to ensure that the brief time for the conference enables us to focus on your child(ren)’s growth and areas of focus for the current school year.  Please note that this Thursday, March 21, is an early release with dismissal at 12:30pm for conferences.

As we continue to work together to build up our community, we welcome donations for our school-wide community service project in support of the Newton Food Pantry.  Please feel free to bring donations when you are at Ward for conferences.  See below for details.

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead,

Safety at Arrival and Dismissal:  All caretakers are asked to please comply with safety procedures and do their part to ensure safe and smooth arrival and dismissal from school each day.

  • Walk on the sidewalk
  • Keep pathways and stairs clear
  • Blue zone is for live pick up/drop off only.
    • Children need to be able to enter/exit the car independently
    • Driver remains in car
    • Driver must attend to flow of traffic and move up the line as far as possible
    • Do not stop as close to the school as possible because it seems that no cars are behind you-- this causes a domino effect
    • Playdates and other plans need to be arranged prior to dismissal or in a safe location other than the blue zone
  • Do NOT drop off/pick up in the bus zone or in front of the driveway during arrival/dismissal times
  • Park only in designated spaces
  • Be attentive to pedestrians and patient of other drivers stopping for pedestrians when driving to and from Ward
  • Please check out this video from Mason Rice and share with other caretakers regarding How to Use the Blue Zone

Snacks:  We have seen a recent increase in students visiting the nurse requesting snacks.  Please be sure to send your child to school with snacks.  The school is not able to provide snacks to students.

School Community Service Project

Message from Student Council:

Everybody in the Ward school community is invited to participate in our school-wide food drive.   Ward is collecting items to support the Newton Food Pantry throughout the month of March. Each grade level is assigned an item and families are welcome to contribute any of the items we are collecting. We are also collecting re-usable and paper grocery bags.  Make sure to think about others before yourself especially those that are in need.  Items should be brought to Ward throughout the month of March.  5th graders will collect items from classrooms throughout the month.

Kindergarten- diapers size 4 & 5

1st grade- flour

2nd grade- healthy cereal

3rd grade- olive oil/canola oil

During the week of March 25-29, we will be holding a “Peek Week”, where adult family members are welcome to join their student’s PE class to participate in a Ward Workout together.
