From the Principal's Desk

Thank you for your overwhelming support of "Walk to School Day."  Over 60% of our community took part by walking or biking to school.  I hope you will consider joining other opportunities such as "Walking Wednesdays" throughout the year.  Not only is it a terrific way to get some extra exercise, but it is a great way to meet other families.

A longstanding tradition at the John Ward School has been our annual "Halloween Hoot" sing-along led by our fifth grade Ward School Singers.  This celebration will be held at 9:00 AM on Friday, October 31st in the Ward Gym.  You are welcome to join us.  We are asking all visitors to sign in at the main entrance and wear a visitor tag.

Please adhere to these Halloween guidelines:
STUDENT COSTUMES

  • Students must carry their costumes to school.  Students should be able to put their costumes on over their clothes for the sing-along.  Keep costumes simple so children can dress themselves in their classroom.
  • All costumes should be kid friendly; young children are easily frightened.
  • All costumes should be school appropriate; children should NOT wear make-up or masks nor should they carry items that may be considered weapons.
  • Parents may wear costumes but may NOT wear masks.  We need to know who you are!
  • Classroom teachers must know where each student is at all times.  Please do not remove children from their class for photos or to help with costumes.

Thank you for your cooperation in making this a safe celebration.

And Now a Word from the PTO

It was wonderful to see so many new and returning families at both Curriculum night and the Welcome Back Picnic.  Both events were very successful thanks to the involvement of so many Ward families.

Hopefully you have also had a chance to attend or participate in one of the many other activities underway already.  The visit to Ward by Bret Bataclan from the Smile Boston Project was enjoyed by a packed room of children.  Thank you to Sherri Wolf and all the members of the Care Committee for arranging that program.  It has also been wonderful to see the enthusiasm
and great spirit exhibited by so many children who have participated both in the Wednesday Walking School Bus, as well as other days of the week.  Thank you to Karin Gavish and Maria Sullivan for getting us "moving" with that.

There are several important activities happening in the month ahead and we hope to have as many of you involved as possible.

This year's Creative Arts and Science season begins with the riveting performance given by the Promethius Dance Company on October 17th.  Your children are sure to come home tapping their feet like you've never seen before!

On October 23rd; the early release Thursday, our children will have the opportunity to help improve their very own Ward School playground by participating the Fun-a-thon.  All raised funds will go towards repaving the beloved, and highly used, wall ball area of the playground.  Help your child get involved today!

(A special thanks goes to Joe Verdone, Dan Cotter, and Pierlugi Balduzzi, who took time over the weekend to help improve the beauty and safety of the playground by replacing some of the boards in high traffic areas.)

Do not forget to book your sitter so you can attend the new Mystery Dinner on Friday November 14th.  Invitations will be coming out next week so be sure to check your child's backpack!  We have some delicious sounding meals on the menu!  This will be a great opportunity to socialize with other Ward families while raising needed funds for the various enrichment and other activities funded by the PTO.  If you are interested we still need a few more homes to host.  Please contact Beth Coomber comber@rcn.com or (617) 417-6886.

Also, Amy Broder has been working diligently with all our K through 5th graders in creating a special piece of art that they'll be very proud to give as a gift.  You can expect to receive your Square 1 Art take home packages the last week of this month.  Details will follow.

The next PTO meeting will be held following drop-off on October 17th.  These meetings focus on upcoming events and happenings at the school and are a chance to share your ideas with the PTO, Principal Audrey Peller, and other Ward families. We hope to use the next meeting as a chance to see what topics people would like covered at future PTO meetings and how we can best use that meeting time.  All are welcome.

Happy Fall!

School Publication of Out-of-District Policy Statement - 2008-09

  • Out-of-District placements for students who wish to attend a school in Newton other than his/her district school are limited.  Such placements are made on a space available basis only.  Newton families, as well as members of Units A, B, C, D, E, NESA, Custodians and Boston parents of students participating in the METCO Program, should call the Office of Student Services at (617) 559-6025 for information.
*  Students who receive acceptance for Out-of-District placement must remain in the school selected or file for out-of-district placement at the appropriate time.
  • Applications for the following school year must be submitted on forms which will be available in the Office of Student Services (Room 215) at the Education Center beginning November 1st.
  • If necessary, a lottery will be implemented to determine the order in which placements will be made.  Completed applications, signed by the in-district principal, can be submitted no earlier than January 5, 2009 and no later than March 31, 2009.
  • Applications submitted after March 31, 2009 will not be included in the lottery.
  • Class size in a given grade, in a given year, in a specific school, may preclude any placements including siblings.

* Tuition Free Enrollment is limited to the per pupil cost of regular education.

Fifth Grade Families: The Understanding Our Differences Program, a disability awareness education program, will take place in the fifth grade at Ward School on November 6th, January 15th and May 7th from 1:00 PM-3:00 PM. This year we will present, Physical Disabilities, Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The program is organized and presented by parents, each program requires 5 parent volunteers. Please consider volunteering for one or all units of this program. It is an excellent opportunity to share time in the classroom with your child , but also to get to know other parents and students. Parent participation is the great strength of this program. Volunteers do not need teaching experience or a medical background.  I would appreciate any time you can give to help us with the success of this program.  If interested please contact: Adrianne at pasaahorn3@comcast.net.

Art Committee Volunteers Needed:  Amy Broder still needs more Art Help. Every two weeks we need volunteers to help frame. It is simple, quick and easy.  Please contact Suzin Osborne at: (617) 332-1665 or email at: suzin@purneydesign.com.

These walks are led by knowledgeable leaders and are free and open to the public. They normally last for an hour or two. Some events are for bicycle or canoe. These walks are a great way to get to know open space areas in Newton.   All walks will meet at 2:00 PM unless otherwise noted. • Ferns Near Hammond Pond, Sunday, October 19th, 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM:  The Webster and Cohen Conservation areas, together with the MDC reservation, form a large wooded expanse that stretches from the shopping malls of Route 9 almost to Newton Centre. They extend on both sides of Hammond Pond Parkway and are home to at least 20 kinds of ferns and related plants. We will visit the southeast corner near the large Hammond Pond, and try to find about a dozen types of ferns. So late in the season some of them may not be looking their best, but a few are evergreens and will stand out more clearly as the other plants fade in the fall. Wear long plants to protect against poison ivy, but bugs should not be a problem so late.   Meet at the trail entrance from the small parking lot at the southwest corner of Hammond Pond, between General Cinemas and the Hammond Pond Parkway at noon.  Trip Leader is Don Lubin (617)254-8464. Visit www.newtonconservators.org for more info.
  • Newton Cemetery Tree Walk Sunday, October 26th, 2:00 PM: The Newton Tree Conservancy is a new conservation organization, a private non-profit dedicated to provide better stewardship for Newton's urban forest and funds for tree plantings.  (See articles in Fall, 2008 issue of the Newton Conservators newsletter.)  Its kickoff event is at City Hall, 12:00 PM  to 5:00 PM.  Part of the event is a guided tree walk through Newton Cemetery, home of large, century-old specimen trees.  There will also be tree plantings and children's activities.  Find details at www.newtontreeconservancy.org. Visit www.newtonconservators.org  for more information.
  • Oakdale Woods Walk Sunday, October 26th, 2:00 PM: The Oakdale Woods are typical of the many small open space parcels in the southern part of the city that were developed after World War II. This small space has been used by neighborhood children (including the tour guide), for winter sledding, acorn fights and informal camping for many generations and was left undeveloped due to its geological features, including a substantial deposit of Roxbury Puddingstone and glacial boulders, as well as a steep cliff running the length of the woods. Old maps going back to at least 1917 show a paper street continuing Oakdale Road through the woods, but for a combination of factors, the road was never built, and the land never developed.  While walking through the woods, using old maps, Peter Kastner will talk about the development of the surrounding area and the specific geological formations that made the woods hard to develop and now make a wonderful, small conservation area.  Meet at Oakdale Woods™ entrance (near old bottling shed) at the eastern end of Oakdale Street at 2:00 PM.  Parking is available at the entrance.  Trip leader is Peter Kastner (617) 244-6094.  Visit www.newtonconservators.org for more information.

Newton Athletic Association (NAA) Basketball for Grades 3-12:  Registration for grades 4-9 closes out October 15th with evaluation October 19th.  For grade 3, the deadline is November 15th, and for high schoolers the deadline is early December.  The league is actively seeking coaches.  For information or to register go to:  www.naabasketball.org.
