From the Principal's Desk
Last week the superintendent reviewed his proposed budget for the coming school year. The following adjustments are relevant to the elementary school portion of the budget:
- Reduce 5.5 elementary teachers and associated time for art, music, and physical education specialists
- Add 1.5 reserve teachers (for unexpected enrollment increases over the summer)
- Add 2.0 math coaches
- Reduce the materials and supplies budget
- Add college interns for multiple uses
- Add 3.0 social workers
- Reduce special education aides
- Reduce elementary lunch attendant positions
- Increase the use of school building fees
- Increase charter maintenance
Under the proposed budget, I anticipate we will continue to have 12 classrooms next year. We are not slated to receive a math coach, but may have some social work time added. We will most likely lose some of our aide time and lunch attendants. I will update you as we go through the budget process.
I anticipate that the Department of Education will require us to make up the day we closed school in January due to a problem with the sewer line. At this time, I am waiting for them to respond to a variety of proposals I suggested to make up this time. As soon as I receive more information, I will let you know.
Our next School Council meeting will be on Thursday, March 19, at 3:30 PM. Meetings are always open to the community. Our agenda includes discussion about the budget and new core values developed by the district.
Join me at the next Ward PTO meeting on Friday, March 20th, for "Everything You Wanted to Know About MCAS".
If you're missing hats, sweatshirts and other clothing items, please check our "lost and found" display in the hallway opposite the office.

Missed Diagnosis: How Lyme Affects Our Children's Lives and Impacts School Performance: Thursday April 2nd, Newton South Auditorium, 7:00 PM, featuring: Dr. Leo Shea III and Dr. Sheila Statlender.
Problems with attention, concentration, processing information, memory decline, multitasking, auditory and visual processing, and planning and disorganization affect academic development and school performance. They impact one's sense of self and can cause one to feel irritable and sad, even angry and argumentative. Add in headaches, sore joints, stomach problems and miscellaneous physical complaints and one questions if these are signs of growing pains, or is something more serious afoot. Often these symptoms are misdiagnosed as ADD, chronic fatigue, OCD, bipolar or other diseases. In reality, what you may be looking at is Lyme disease and, if left undetected or improperly treated, Lyme can move to the brain and affect other organs. We are in the midst of an epidemic growing faster than AIDS: the RT 128 belt is nearly as endemic as the Cape and Islands, yet it is often unrecognized.
As a parent and educator, it is important that you hear from two top Lyme experts about how to recognize symptoms of Lyme, how this disease can affect school performance, and what you as teachers and parents can do about it. Sponsored by the NSHS PTSO.
