It's that time of year again!!! I plan to teach the "Growing and Changing" unit to the 5th grade class this Thursday afternoon. This health and wellness unit will focus on changes that take place in our bodies during adolescence and puberty. The lessons are alligned with the learning standards of the Mass. Health Curriculum Frameworks.
The students will be separated into two groups, boys and girls. The fifth grade teachers and I will teach the girls and Mr. MacPherson and I will present the unit to the boys. The program includes a video and question and answer session. It is clear and informative without any information about sexual activity. Next year, in 6th grade, students will have a more comprehensive unit that includes additional information about the changes related to puberty.
Please feel free to check out the web site which will show the video that I use.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns and if for some reason you do NOT want your child to partake in this lesson, please contact me before Thursday, May 21, 1PM. I always have a few parents that will call and ask if there are many students that do not take part and as of now, teaching this unit for 6 years (2 years at other schools!) I have not had any students or parents opt out. However, I absolutely support your decision. Please be in touch only if you do not want to participate. Thanks for your cooperation!
Best, Karin LiebermanRN
