From the CoPresidents
We cannot say enough about the inaugural Ward Fun Run!!!! What a success! We owe an enormous gratitude to our coordinator, Penny Ismay, who was so incredibly diligent in her planning that she even got us perfect weather. Thanks to Mr. Miles for leading an inspiring and high-energy pep rally for students, staff and families. Thanks to Principal Brogadir for her massive amount of support for this idea, for her endless energy and for her perfect Dolphin costume and spirit. Thanks to Ms. Tempesta for her organization and flexibility that truly makes these events possible. Thanks to our teachers and staff for sharing their students with us and supporting the fun. Thanks to ALL the parents who cheered, gave out water and stickers and quite literally kept us on course. Thank you to all of our donors from near and far (hundreds of you from 16 states and 3 countries!). Thanks to our students for bringing their energy and enthusiasm. What a community effort! What a memory made!

With all we have to say tho- we want to know what you think! This was a brand new event at Ward and feedback helps us to think about the future: Ward Fun Run Survey

2nd Annual Ward Fall Fest
An event you do not want to miss! Join us at the Ward School playground on November 13th from 12:30-2:30 PM for an epic fall scavenger hunt, crafts, face painting, music, cider donuts and more! Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch if you wish. Hot dogs will be served too! This event will be fun for the whole family and is open to the entire Ward community…..we are growing stronger as a community together!

In this month of Thanksgiving, we are grateful that as a community we can give back to our neighbors. Please note that we will do this 2 ways at Fall Fest:

  • The 5th grade will be accepting food donations for the Newton Food Pantry. More details below on what items are most helpful at this time.

  •  There will be a raffle ($10 tickets) for a beautiful Thanksgiving centerpiece. All money raised from the raffle will go to Ward Cares, so Ms. Brogadir has additional funding to support students or families in need.

We are grateful for all you do and look forward to spending the afternoon together celebrating our school.

As their final year service project, Ward’s 5th graders will be running a school-wide food drive over the next couple of weeks.  The objective of this food drive will be to gather food donations from the community for the Newton Food Pantry, The Pantry will distribute these donations to families experiencing food insecurity in these times of uncertainty.

Donations will then be delivered to the Newton Food Pantry on November 17th.

Community Notes & Announcements

Pumpkin Smash
Bring your pumpkins to Newton’s annual Pumpkin Smash at City Hall on Nov. 5, the Saturday after Halloween, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Why put your pumpkin in with your yard waste when it’s much more fun to smash it?
This family friendly event takes our orange pumpkins and turns them “green.” All our smashed pumpkins will be composted by Black Earth Compost (our curbside composting partner), thus reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions and creating a valuable amendment for our soils.

You can fling, toss and smash your pumpkin in all sorts of ways, including with smashing machines made by the Newton LigerBots, the high school robotics team.

Pre-registration is encouraged but onsite registration will be available for the Pumpkin Smash which will be held rain or shine. All the information above is available at www.newtonma.gov/recycling
